Bratislava, March 18 (TASR) - The ticketing system for charging lorries driving through Slovakia is about to be extended, TASR learnt from Transport Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic on Thursday.
The system, as an alternative payment method to the electronic toll system for lorries on sections of highways, expressways and first-class roads, was originally supposed to be abolished by April.
The ministry extended the ticketing system after a meeting on Thursday with representatives of the CESMAD hauliers association. "It's our intention to meet the demands of hauliers halfway. Their proposal to extend the ticketing system is feasible," said Jurikovic.
Transit ticketing will remain in place longer partly in response to demands from foreign hauliers. "The main benefit of the system is that it allows lorries at transit border crossings to be processed more quickly," said CESMAD general secretary Pavol Reich.
The ticketing system was introduced as a temporary alternative payment method two months ago, and has proven efficient. More than 40,000 tickets have been sold so far, with the system being used by 76 percent of lorries passing through the Cunovo-Rajka border crossing (Bratislava region) and 73 percent of lorries at the Brodske-Breclav crossing (Trnava region).
Among other concessions, the ministry has given its consent to a proposal to free N1 category vehicles equipped with trailers weighing under 3.5 tonnes from tolls. As of mid-April motorway stickers will suffice for these vehicles.
