SDKU: Unemployment in Slovakia Growing 3 Times Faster Than in EU

Bratislava, March 18 (TASR) - Unemployment in Slovakia is worsening when compared to the EU average, increasing almost three times faster, said leader of the SDKU-DS anti-crisis team Eugen Jurzyca at a briefing on Thursday.

"It seems as if the Slovak Government can't manage the crisis and the fight against it. At the same time, it's putting the Slovak economy into debt and putting money from the previous electoral term into this one, while the situation in comparison to the EU is getting worse," stated Jurzyca, adding that this is damaging the living standards of the middle class.

According to Jurzyca, Prime Minister Robert Fico hasn't noticed the negative developments in unemployment. "He (Fico) repeatedly claims that it isn't true that unemployment is growing faster in Slovakia than in the EU. Robert Fico claims that Slovakia's biggest problem is the Hungarian President (Laszlo Solyom) and the Slovak Opposition," he said.

Jurzyca claimed that there are many specific measures that could help the economy. It's important to increase the quality of the business environment and to fight corruption, which, according to him, eats up the middle class and people who "dutifully pay their taxes, work and pay deductions". He also thinks that the atmosphere in the country should change, so that people would get the feeling that it isn't only profitable to work in Slovakia, but also to employ people.
