Analysts: February Unemploment Better Than Expected

Bratislava, March 18 (TASR) - Developments in Slovakia's unemployment rate in February were better than expected. Setting aside seasonal influences, the reported rate actually fell - by 0.09 percentage points on the month, TASR was told by bank analysts on Thursday.

"Although these positive results may predict that a certain stabilisation in the unemployment rate will come earlier than we thought, one swallow doesn't make a summer. That's why only the months ahead will show if a stabilisation or even a fall in unemployment will become a reality," UniCredit Bank analyst David Derenik told TASR.

Volksbank analyst Vladimir Vano said that current developments shouldn't be underestimated, however. According to him, the figures correspond to earlier signals from industry, which managed to return to overall year-on-year growth in November of last year. "Signs of recovery in selected industrial sectors were present as early as last year," said Vano.

The Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (UPSVaR) announced on Thursday that Slovakia's unemployment rate rose slightly again in February 2010, going up by 0.08 percentage points month-on-month to reach 12.97 percent.
