SNS: Gasparovic and Fico Will Be to Blame If Patriot Act Fails

Bratislava, March 18 (TASR) - The co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS) on Thursday urged President Ivan Gasparovic not to return its Patriot Act to Parliament as requested by Premier Robert Fico in order to delay the bills entry into force from April to September.

Gasparovic and Fico will be held responsible should the law fail to pass a second time after being sent back to Parliament, SNS vice-chair Anna Belousovova told reporters, adding that at least 76 votes (a simple majority) would be required to re-approve the measure. The president has until March 19 to sign the bill into law.

Assessing the party's performance in its four years as a member of the governing Coalition, chairman Jan Slota said that SNS's achievements are evident from the 840 schools that have been reconstructed and the 13,000 new apartments that have been built, the largest number since 1990.

Slota pledged to sign up to the collection of funds for a statue of Svatopluk, ruler of the Nitra prinicipality in the 9th century, to be set up in the main courtyard of Bratislava Castle, a move that was instigated by the trio of Gasparovic, Fico and Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska.
