KDH: Figel Calls on Cuban Government to Release Dissident from Jail

Bratislava, March 18 (TASR) - Leader of the Christian Democrat KDH Jan Figel on Thursday called on Cuban government to release political prisoner Alfredo Dominguez Batista from jail, saying the imprisoned man's health condition has reportedly worsened dramatically over the past months, now being in danger of his life.

Figel is also being reported as having symbolically adopted Batista. KDH chairman says that Batista has already served half of the 14-year's sentence, and according to Cuban laws he could now be released.

"I've sent a letter to Cuban Foreign Affairs Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, in which I've asked him to make necessary steps to release Alfredo Batista," informed Figel at a news conference, adding that, as part of his initiative, he also turned to European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek to call for the Union to pressure Cuba to release its political prisoners, as these were sentenced with excessively tough punishments.

Batista and several other dissidents were imprisoned by Cuban Communist regime seven years ago.
