Tbilisi, March 17 (TASR) - Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak was assured by his Georgian counterpart Grigol Vashadze in Tbilisi on Tuesday that support will be provided for Slovak businessmen who come to do business in Georgia, ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR on Wednesday.
The two ministers focused especially on economic co-operation between their countries. Vashadze highlighted Slovakia's potential for participating in the construction and running of Georgian water dams, as it has good experience and the necessary know-how in this sphere.
Lajcak stressed that the two countries first need the required legal framework in order to move their economic co-operation forward. With this in mind, the ministers agreed that they would prepare as soon as possible an Investment Protection Agreement and a Double Taxation Prevention Treaty.
The ministers also discussed Georgia's integration efforts vis-a-vis the European Union and NATO. Lajcak provided his Georgian counterpart with a list of offers of assistance for the country in the sphere of transforming and implementing European legislation. He also repeated that Slovakia is ready to support Georgia via the EU's Eastern Partnership programme, which includes six post-communist countries - Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia and Belarus. When it comes to Georgia's interest in joining NATO, Slovakia is ready to support its efforts, as it promotes an open-door approach.
Vashadze appreciated Slovakia's willingness to provide assistance and praised the fact that a large group of Slovak businessmen accompanied Lajcak during his visit. They took part in a Slovak-Georgian economic forum, during which they discussed the potential of specific business projects.
Lajcak also met Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and other high representatives of the country.
