Electricity Production in Slovakia in 2009 Exceeded Consumption

Bratislava, March 17 (TASR) - A total of 29 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity were produced in Slovakia in 2009, which exceeded consumption by 3 TWh due to the economic crisis, according to the latest issue of a weekly issued by the Slovak-German Trade and Industry Chamber.

Slovakia's three large electricity suppliers - Zapadoslovenska energetika (Western-Slovak Energy/ZSE), Stredoslovenska energetika (Central-Slovak Energy/SSE) and Vychodoslovenska energetika (Eastern-Slovak Energy/VSE) - recorded a joint turnover of €2.1 billion in 2009, said ZSE CEO Dietrich Max Fey.

Gas consumption was also lower last year, said director of the section for managing key customers of Slovak gas utility SPP Peter Kuchta. Even though households recorded a slight increase in gas consumption, Slovakia's economy in 2009 consumed 17.5 percent less than the year before. Apart from the crisis, this was also due to the fact that SPP doesn't have a monopoly on the Slovak market any more, with its competitors being RWE, Shell and VNG.

The Slovak energy industry is expected to be supported with investments of €15 billion by 2030, said Juraj Novak of the Economy Ministry. Of the total, 44 percent has been designated for mining renewable energies, 36 percent for developing nuclear energy, 15 percent for thermal power plants and 5 percent for the Ipel hydro-power plant.

According to Novak, Slovakia should meet the goal set by the EU to cover at least 14 percent of its electricity consumption with renewable resources by 2020. Green energy resources currently cover 6 percent of domestic consumption, he added.
