Bratislava, March 16 (TASR) - Slovakia's central bank NBS last year posted a profit of €70.588 million, according to the audited final accounts that were approved by the NBS board on Tuesday.
The year before, the central bank recorded a loss of €1.227 billion. The bank board therefore decided that the 2009 profit will be used to cover unsettled losses from past years. The total negative assets of the central bank represented €4.358 billion on December 31, 2009.
"The economic results of the bank (in 2009) were positively influenced by the profits from its financial activities, representing a volume of €131.223 million, which included profits from interests and commercial documents in particular," said NBS spokesperson Jana Kovacova, adding that the euro (which was introduced on January 1, 2009) almost eliminated exchange rate losses.
Based on a decision by the European Central Bank's Board of Governors, the individual central banks in the eurozone were distributing profits from the ECB's 8-percent share on the emission of eurobanknotes worth €787.157 million. The profits were distributed according to the ratio of shares paid by the individual central banks into ECB's basic assets. NBS was given €7.821 million from the profit. Its share on the ECB's basic assets reaches 0.9935 percent.
The net operating costs of the Slovak central bank in 2009 reached €60.635 million, while they stood at €111.771 million the year before, said Kovacova.
