Lajcak Visits Azerbaijan to Discuss Opportunities for Mutual Business

Baku, March 16 (TASR) - Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Tuesday wrapped up his visit to Azerbaijan, the first stop on this week's tour of the countries in the Southern Caucasus. Lajcak then left for Georgia, TASR was told by his spokesman Peter Stano the same day.

In the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku, Lajcak met his local counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov. Both officials discussed the need to close the fundamental economic agreements between the two countries as soon as possible. They also concluded that bilateral relations are trouble-free; however, there is a significant unused potential in the sphere of economic ties and trade. That's why Lajcak has come to Azerbaijan accompanied by 14 Slovak businessmen, and in the beginning of his visit he opened a Slovak-Azerbaijani economic forum.

Lajcak also stressed the host country's importance in terms of European energy security, as Azerbaijan disposes of significant supplies of oil and natural gas. This was also among the topics that Lajcak discussed with President Ilham Aliyev. Lajcak spoke of the importance of the Nabucco gas line in terms of diversification of energy supplies into the European Union; and Aliyev said Azerbaijan (which currently has Euro-Asia's fastest-growing economy and has enjoyed 13.6-percent annual growth on average over the past ten years) is ready to supply EU with gas if the Union was ready too.

Lajcak provided his partners in Baku with a list of Slovak offers for co-operation, especially when it comes to offering Slovakia's experience in transformation and integration processes.
