VUC Elections: Two Incumbent Governors Defend Their Office

Bratislava, November 29 (TASR) - Coalition candidates have secured three governor seats in the four regions in which the second round of the Higher Territorial Units (VUCs) elections took place on Saturday, according to official results released by the Central Election Committee (UVK) on Sunday.
The overall turnout across the country was 18.39 percent, which is 4.51 percent lower than in the first round on November 14.
The highest turnout was in Bratislava region - 20.18 percent, followed by Presov region - 19.22 percent, Banska Bystrica region - 18.01 percent and Trencin region - 15.77 percent.
SDKU-DS MP Pavol Freso (also backed by KDH, SMK, OKS and SaS) is the only successful opposition candidate for the governor post, winning the run-off against Vladimir Bajan (independent with support of Smer-SD, LS-HZDS, SZS and HZD) in Bratislava region with 60.5 percent. Bajan received 39.49 percent of votes.
Incumbent Trencin governor Pavol Sedlacek (LS-HZDS, Smer-SD and SNS) defended his office by defeating former defence minister Martin Fedor (SDKU-DS, KDH, SaS and OKS) with 59.08 percent of votes, while Fedor was supported by 40.91 percent.
Presov governor Peter Chudik (Smer-SD, LS-HZDS, HZD and SZS) also remains in the office following a victorious head-to-head race against former KDH MEP Jan Hudacky (also backed by SDKU-DS and SaS). Chudik received 54.06 percent of votes in the election, while Hudacky obtained 45.93 percent.
Smer-SD MEP Vladimir Manka (also supported by LS-HZDS) received 53.7 percent of votes in the race against rightist Jozef Mikus (SDKU-DS, KDH, OKS, KDS and SaS) at 46.29 percent in Banska Bystrica region.
