Solyom Should First Pay Attention to Hungary's International Obligations

Bratislava, March 15 (TASR) - According to the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry, Hungarian President Laszlo Solyom should, as a head of state, first of all care about his country following international obligations related to how Hungary is treating minorities, as was recently concluded by the Council of Europe.

The ministry alluded to this on Monday in response to the statements Solyom made over the weekend in Serbia - that Hungarians living in Slovakia, Serbia and Romania should be learning the respective state languages only as a foreign language.

Spokesman of the Foreign Affairs Ministry Peter Stano also said that Slovak diplomacy finds it "inappropriate, non-European and a disservice in terms of good neighbour relations when the president of Hungary makes contentious statements related to Slovakia in third countries". Stano added that Solyom must understand the negative impact of his statements.
