Bratislava, March 15 (TASR) - Non-parliamentary party Most-Hid announced on Monday that it is proposing the setting-up of a Fund of Slovak-Hungarian understanding to help ease bilateral relations.
According to Most-Hid vice-chairman Rudolf Chmel, this project could be accepted by all but one of Slovakia's political parties [almost certainly a reference to the Slovak National Party (SNS) - ed. note]. The goal of the project is not only to fulfil the basic agreement between Slovakia and Hungary but to improve relations between the majority population and minorities within the states as well.
The Fund would be independent from the governments and parliaments of the two countries, with both sides contributing €1-2 million at the beginning. More finances would be obtained from non-budgetary sources. The administrative costs would be reduced to a minimum, not exceeding €100,000 per year.
According to Chmel, one of the most important investments would be in employment and youth education. The fund should help to finance joint activities in the spheres of culture, science, art and sports. Furthermore, the fund would support partnerships between Slovak and Hungarian villages and towns, historical research, support for minorities with a focus on cultural and educational activities and the maintenance of cultural sites.
