Slota: Brussels Should Take Away Hungary's EU Presidency

Bratislava, March 14 (TASR) - The co-ruling Slovak National Party (SNS) expects the Slovak Government to send a letter of protest to Brussels containing a proposal to withhold Hungary's future presidency of the European Union (January-June 2011) until Hungary abandons its irredentist tendencies, SNS chairman Jan Slota said on Sunday in response to recent statements made by Hungarian President Laszlo Soloyom.
Slota views Solyom's claim that ethnic Hungarians living in Slovakia, Serbia and Romania should learn the respective state languages only as foreign languages as a dangerous continuation of Greater Hungarian chauvinism.
At the same time, Slota said that his party cautions against playing with ethnic fire that doesn't respect European principles of state sovereignty and integrity.
"SNS is seriously concerned that a economically decimated Hungary whipped up with revanchism is heading towards a planned conflict with neighbouring states, with not even a military conflict ruled out, mainly after the accession of (Fidesz chairman) Viktor Orban's government," said Slota.
"I'm surprised that President Solyom again went so far as to meddle in the affairs of a foreign state, but as a president of a neighbouring country he has the political right to do so," said opposition Christian Democrat (KDH) caucus leader Pavol Hrusovsky, adding that KDH is ready to defend the national interests of Slovakia and its public at any time.
