Slovak Resurgence Movement Lays Wreaths at Tiso's Statue in Cakajovce

Cakajovce, March 13 (TASR) - Around 100 members and sympathisers of the Slovak Resurgence Movement (SHO) gathered at the Pantheon of Slovak Historical Personalities in Cakajovce (Nitra region) on Saturday to mark the 71st anniversary of the founding of the first Slovak Republic (1939-45).

"SHO will always proudly profess its allegiance to the work and legacy of Andrej Hlinka [one of the most important Slovak politicians before the World War II - ed. note] and Jozef Tiso [President of the wartime Slovak Republic - ed. note]," TASR was told by SHO chairman Robert Svec after laying wreaths at Tiso's statue. Svec added that the celebration of the anniversary had really a nation-wide character, as Slovaks from across the country came to Cakajovce.

Svec in his speech also touched the Patriot Act, which was drawn up by the Slovak National Party (SNS) and adopted in Parliament earlier this month. "Seventy years ago our patriots fought of their sheer love to Slovakia and the nation, and they didn't need limousines, either offices and assistants. Current MPs recall national and patriotic affairs and the people only before elections," said Svec.

"We showed the whole Slovakia that the Slovak spirit has lived and will live forever," stated the SHO chairman.

The gathering took place without any incidents. The celebrations continued in the evening at the local community centre with a cultural programme, which also featured a performance by Slovak National Theatre (SND) soloist Ivan Ozvat.
