EU Provides €111 Million for Construction of R1 Express Road

Bratislava, March 12 (TASR) - The European Union has decided to allocate financial resources for construction of the R1 express road between Zarnovica and Sasovske Podhradie (Banska Bystrica region), Transport, Posts and Telecommunication Ministry spokesman Stanislav Jurikovic said in a written statement for media on Friday.

The construction works on the 18-km section of the road will cost €130.61 million, with the EU providing €111 million - hence, 85 percent of the total costs will be covered by eurofunds. The express road will be built in two stages. The first stage was completed in November 2009, with the second set to be finished by November 2010.

The Transport Ministry applied for the money from Operational Programme Transport in February 2009. "The European Commission has decided on March 1, 2010 that the project is in accordance with transport policies of the EU, which are designed to allocate finances to the regions that need them the most," said Jurikovic.

Another €50 million-plus project to be financed under the Operational Programme Transport is a modernisation of the railroad track between Zilina and Krasno nad Kysucou (Zilina region).
