Bratislava, March 12 (TASR) - The latest Focus agency poll from early February shows that the number of Slovaks who are proud of the achievements of the country since independence in 1993 is down to 68 percent from 77 percent a year earlier.
Unveiling the results of the poll, which featured 1,301 respondents, Zara Butorova, analyst with the Institute for Public Issues (IVO) think-tank that commissioned the survey, commented that citizens with a sense of pride are predominant among supporters of the ruling parties. Also on the rise is the proportion of those certain our society is headed in the wrong direction, which has jumped from 31 percent to 46 percent with Opposition party supporters in preponderance.
According to Butorova, the public confidence in key political institutions dropped year-on-year but shot up vis-a-vis the trust levels before the parliamentary elections in June 2006. Four years ago the Government was trusted by 21 percent versus 42 percent currently, and Parliament by 24 percent compared to 40 percent now. Confidence in the President and the Constitutional Court by contrast fell below the levels seen five years ago.
The list of the worst social problems is dominated by unemployment, which was mentioned as a concern by 66 percent. Among other concerns were social security, the standard of living, corruption and cronyism, healthcare, economic policy and economic performance. Among the top ten most pressing problems respondents rank criminality, the state of democracy, ethnic tension, education and the performance of judiciary.
