Svatopluk to Adorn Bratislava Castle Courtyard

Bratislava, March 12(TASR) - The three top constitutional officials – President Ivan Gasparovic, Chairman of Parliament Pavol Paska and Prime Minister Robert Fico – on Friday launched a civil association named Svatopluk aimed at marking the main courtyard of the Bratislava Castle with a statue of this historical figure.

The installation of the statue will be part of the ongoing reconstruction of the castle, which is designed to attract more visitors and restore the cultural and social significance to the landmark castle, Paska said at a news conference.

Cast in bronze, the 7.8-metre statue created by sculptor Jan Kulich, who has donated both the statue and his copyright to the Parliament, is expected to cost €270,000. Prime Minister Robert Fico told reporters that the money will come from outside the state budget.

Paska and Fico have contributed €1,000 apiece towards the statue of Svatopluk, who in the late 9th century reigned in Nitra over an historic area known as Great Moravia.
