Chovan: Producers and Retail Chains Should Play Fair in Setting Prices

Bratislava, March 11 (TASR) - When retail chains do business in Slovakia in the food sector, fair participation in prices between retailers and producers stands as an important issue, Agriculture Minister Vladimir Chovan on Thursday told ambassadors of EU countries from which the chains come from.
Andrew Pittam from Great Britain, Daphne Bergsma from the Netherlands, Axel Hartmann from Germany, Helmut Wessley from Austria, and Pierre Clouet and Rene Christine Claveire on behalf of France took part in the discussions.
Ambassadors and representatives of embassies were informed by Smer-SD MP Marian Zahumensky about the legislative initiative dealing with business conditions for retail chains, stressing that it is necessary to prevent from unfair practices in this sphere.
According to the Slovak side, the amendment to the law on inappropriate conditions in business chains between customers and producers is aimed at ensuring quality as well as safe food products. "The economic crisis has had put downward pressure on the prices of products and incomes of farmers," said Chovan at the session. He at the same time spoke of how he would welcome an open dialogue and called for meetings of experts from the individual states aimed at an exchange of experience.
Foreign representatives expressed their interest in the issue, emphasising the importance of mutual communication between the Slovak Parliament, Government and other states. They appreciated Chovan's attitude and the interest of the Slovak authorities to deal with the issues surrounding retail chains.
