Fico: I Am Ready to Run for Re-election as Slovakia's Prime Minister

Bratislava, March 11 (TASR) - Prime Minister and leader of Smer-SD party Robert Fico said at a press conference on Thursday that he's ready to seek the post of head of executive power again following the general election set for June 12, TASR learnt on the same day.
He added that following the election Smer members will have to resume discussion on whether the posts of Smer party leader and Prime Minister will continue to be performed by the same person, as is currently the case – or whether the two positions should be held by separate people.
"That's a discussion that certainly lies ahead of us. I would be hoodwinking voters if after four years in power I topped the slate and, if we enjoy a good result in the election I then said that I'm not interested (in the PM's post)," said Fico.
He stressed that Smer follows a principle whereby if the party wins enough votes to be charged with forming the Cabinet, then the talks will be led by a Smer delegation headed by the party chairman.
He noted that anywhere between three and eight parties could make the 5-percent threshold needed to secure seats in Parliament. "We're not going to rule out any party for post-election cooperation," he reiterated.
At the same time, though, he told the journalists that voters might just push Smer aside, "in which case we'll be a highly strong Opposition," he added.
