Terrorist Suspect Mustafa Labsi Back in Slovakia

Bratislava, March 11 (TASR) - Austrian security authorities on Thursday escorted Algerian terrorist suspect Mustafa Labsi back to Slovakia. It was reported that Labsi should now be placed in custody in Secovce (Kosice region).

Labsi is suspected of having cooperated with the terrorist network Al-Qaeda in the past, and Slovak police arrested him on May 4, 2007. In Slovakia, as well as in other EU countries, he has filed for asylum. Labsi's wife is a Slovak citizen, and they have a child together.

The man was released from a detention facility for foreigners in Medvedov (Trnava region) on February 3, 2009 following his 180-day stay (the maximum length of detention someone can be held without trial) there. He was then transferred to a holding facility in Opatovska Nova Ves (Banska Bystrica region) while awaiting a final decision regarding his asylum request.

Labsi, who has yet to be tried or sentenced for committing any specific crime, is legally banned from staying in Slovakia until 2016 - however, until the decision on his asylum is released, he may not be expelled from the country.

The Algerian suspect fled to Austria on December 19, 2009, where he was later arrested by Austrian police as an illegal alien.
