Mikolaj and French Ambassador Seal Deal on Cooperation in Education

Bratislava, March 9 (TASR) - Education Minister Jan Mikolaj and French Ambassador to Slovakia Henry Cuny on Tuesday signed an agreement between the ministry and the French Foreign Affairs Ministry on establishing closer links in the areas of education, language training as well as co-operation in the university and scientific fields, TASR learnt later in the day.

According to Mikolaj, the two countries have thus far had close ties in bilingual education at grammar schools as well as in university education.

"We haven't had a legislative framework that would cover everything, so we signed a framework agreement. I'm glad the consent of both sides has been secured," Mikolaj told TASR. The agreement, which spans the 2010-14 period, will be followed up by more agreements, he added.

In line with the agreement, France and Slovakia will support the development of partnerships between education facilities and provide internships for teachers as well as teaching pupils. "What's important for us is to have teachers from France come to Slovakia, so they can help our teachers and students be in touch with the genuine French language. It (the language) is becoming very popular in Slovakia," he added.
