Bratislava, November 27 (TASR) - By being named a vice-president of the EU Commission, Maros Sefcovic has made it directly into the EU Commission's kitchen, said Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday.
"He'll be there for everything. He'll have a great amount of information, and so I'm looking forward to co-operating with him. Whichever way you look at it, it's a great diplomatic success for Slovakia," said Fico in reaction to EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso's decision to confer the post of Inter-institutional Relations and Administration on Sefcovic.
Fico added that Sefcovic will manage over 30,000 employees and will be resolving conflicts between the EU Commission, Council and Parliament. He said that Sefcovic will be present at all important decisions, and that Slovakia will be able to rely on him for information not only from the sectors of energy and transport, which Slovakia was interested in, but from all sectors under the EU Commission's authority.
Barroso said on Friday that the Slovak Commissioner has received one of the most important portfolios. He said that he made the decision because during co-operation with him in the past month Sefcovic has shown himself to be an extraordinarily able politician who has huge diplomatic experience. "I want somebody I can trust as an agent between the EU Commission, Council and Parliament. That is why he will be one of the vice-presidents," said Barroso.
According to the EU Commission President, Sefcovic has progressed the most because he was the only one of the seven new vice-presidents who didn't work for the Commission for the whole of its previous five-year term.
