Slovakia Lacks Legislation to Challenge EU Consulting Mechanism

Bratislava, March 8 (TASR) - Slovakia lacks relevant legislation allowing it to challenge within eight weeks those European Union bills proposed by the European Commission and European Parliament under the Lisbon Treaty deemed in violation of the principle of subsidiarity, independent lawmaker Milan Urbani and lawmaker for SDKU-DS Alexander Slafkovsky agree.

Urbani said he had sought to implement such legislation through amending the law on parliamentary session rules and on the interaction between the country's parliament and government but had to withdraw those bills at the urging of LS-HZDS chairman and party caucus leader Vladimir Meciar.

"The Slovak legislature will have to adopt original amending bills or other texts regulating the Lisbon mechanism of protecting subsidiarity," said Slafkovsky.

Chairman of Parliament Pavol Paska however believes that the Slovak legislature since 2005 has been having mechanism which defines the status of Parliament under the acts of the European Union.
