Sefcovic: EU Commission and States to Have Closer Links on Legislation

Bratislava, March 7 (TASR) - When it comes to Europe-wide legislation concerning measures aimed at the implementation of the bloc's 'EU 2020 strategy', which is set to replace the Lisbon strategy, the European Commission aims to engage in closer dialogue with the EU's member countries, EU Commissioner for Inter-institutional Relations and Administration and Commission's vice-president Maros Sefcovic told TASR on Sunday.

"In the first place I believe that we have to use this year for making sure that national parliaments know about this option ... that they become familiar with this mechanism and become involved in it," said Sefcovic, who is Slovakia's representative on the European Commission.

That is why he has set about visiting EU-member countries, with Slovakia being the first on the list this week, due to be followed by Portugal and Spain.

The new strategy is set to be discussed at a session of the European Council later this month. "It's expected that the council will okay or modify the strategy in some way. Based on these horizontally set objectives, talks will be led between the Commission and the individual member countries on their individual objectives," he added.

The new strategy should include different goals for different countries, taking into consideration their starting positions. "We believe that we'll manage to achieve goals that will be realistic but, at the same time, ambitious for the individual member countries though the goals may vary," said Sefcovic.
