Meciar Confirmed as HZDS Election Leader

Ruzomberok, March 6 (TASR) - Vladimir Meciar is the leader of the list of candidates heading for the general election on June 12 on the LS-HZDS slate, it was decided by more than 220 delegates of the party's nomination session in Ruzomberok (Zilina region) on Saturday.

Parliament vice-chairman Tibor Csabaj has become second, followed by MP Milan Rehak, party vice-chair Barbora Strakova and Environment Ministry State Secretary Jaroslav Jadus, Meciar informed at a press conference held after the session.

"Our list of candidates is not a list of stars, but experts, who are competent and prepared to held posts in parliamentary committees and the Government," said Meciar.

According to him, the party enjoys bigger Coalition potential comparing to the past and its intention is to reach at least 10 percent of the votes. "We're ready to negotiate with every partner, even though we're still closest to Smer-SD. For preventing its undoubted power from becoming unrestrained, it (Smer) needs a stable partner. The Slovak National Party (SNS) is responsible for many issues that have cost us credit. They'll have to be explained, so that they don't remain as a burden for the new governing Coalition," said Meciar.

Meciar stressed that the whole election programme of his party is based on realistic commitments instead of promises that can't be fulfilled. According to HZDS election leader, the effects of the crisis have to be minimised by quick solutions. "If social assurances should be achieved, we have to renew labour opportunities for most people. Labour must be the source of livelihood, not social allowances," he added.
