Office of Government Proxy for Roma Communities Rejects UN Criticism

Bratislava, March 5 (TASR) - Slovakia is proceeding in line with international legislation and conventions, dealing intensively with the problems of its citizens in all spheres, including the elimination of all forms of racial discrimination, TASR was told by Iveta Duchonova from the Office of the Government Proxy for Roma Communities in Slovakia on Friday.

Duchonova was speaking in reaction to a report presented on Thursday by UN High Commissioner Navi Pillay, which concludes that behaviour towards Roma minorities has deteriorated in various European countries, including Slovakia.

According to Duchonova, the UN committee for the elimination of racial discrimination at its session in February assessed developments in Slovakia in this sphere as positive. She noted that Slovakia is a member state of an international programme called 'The Decade of Roma Inclusion 2005-2015', the basic philosophy of which is integration in priority areas such as education, health, employment, and housing, and the promotion of public education against discrimination, poverty and gender inequality.

In addition, a Slovak pilot project called 'Local Strategies of Comprehensive Approach', which is aimed at raising employment and education levels in marginalised Roma communities, is a unique project in Europe and a highly-appreciated tool for improving the situation, stressed Duchonova.
