Fico: Quality of Education Needs Improving, Ministry on Right Track

Bratislava, March 5 (TASR) - In an attempt to categorise colleges and universities in Slovakia based on their quality, Education Minister Jan Mikolaj has begun an extremely difficult task, said Prime Minister Robert Fico after carrying out an inspection at Mikolaj's ministry on Friday.

The premier said that he will fully support the minister's efforts. "Although we may be satisfied with how many university students we have, we still can't be satisfied with the quality of education that these students are being offered," he said.

However, Fico praised the ministry's contribution to the development of science and the way that EU funds have been drawn to date. "The activities of colleges and universities are being interlinked with those of the private sector and the Slovak Academy of Sciences. It's starting to shape up well," said the premier.

The legislative activities of the ministry have also been carried out in an excellent way, said Fico, adding that the ministry has been doing a good job in general. "From the perspective of the Government Manifesto, we've found no shortcomings," he claimed, noting that no financial cuts will be made in the Education Ministry's budget.
