Parliament: Purchases Won't Be Rounded Off to Nearest 5 cents

Bratislava, March 4 (TASR) – Parliament on Thursday rejected a amending proposal to the Prices Act submitted by Slovak National Party (SNS) MP Jozef Duracka that would have introduced the rounding-off of purchases in shops to the nearest 5 euro cents.
Duracka proposed that coins with a nominal value of 1 and 2 cents should still be valid, but wouldn't be needed in shops, thereby reducing the circulation of small coins to a minimum. The coins couldn't be withdrawn, as the European Central Bank is the only institution with the power to do this.
Slovakia experienced a withdrawal of coins in 2003, when coins with values of 10 and 20 hellers were removed from circulation.
