Number of Slovaks Working Abroad Fell by Nearly One Quarter Last Year

Bratislava, March 4 (TASR) - Around 129,000 Slovaks were employed abroad last year, which is 39,000 less than the year before, or a reduction of 23 percent, according to the latest figures reported by the Slovak Statistics Office.

"The most significant reductions were seen in the Czech Republic and Great Britain, where the numbers of working Slovaks dropped by 20,300 and 6,100 year-on-year, respectively," stats office chair Ludmila Benkovicova said on Thursday.

The fresh data reveals that most of the new labour migrants from Slovakia in 2009 went to Austria and the Czech Republic. In terms of labour market segments, most were employed in construction and other branches of industry.

However, as Ivan Chrappa from the stats office's labour and salaries department pointed out, the international statistics methodology applied here only covers those employed abroad for up to one year, "which means that the real numbers (of Slovaks with jobs abroad) are higher."

The unemployment rate in Slovakia stood at 12.1 percent last year, with 324,200 jobless - an increase of 25.9 percent on the year. Chrappa assumes that no improvements will be seen in this respect in the next few months, or at least not in the first half of 2010.
