Bratislava, March 4 (TASR) - President Ivan Gasparovic on Thursday met representatives of the Union of Slovak Municipalities, led by mayor of Bratislava Andrej Durkovsky.
Durkovsky asked Gasparovic to support an initiative aimed at protecting water resources in Zitny Ostrov, in reference to the planned construction of the Schwechat-Bratislava oil pipeline through the area.
The president said that he is convinced that water resources shouldn't be put in jeopardy - even if the pipeline link between Schwechat in Austria and Bratislava is an important project. "I support oil-pipeline construction, but traversing another area - that is, a different alternative must be chosen."
The mayor of Bratislava also informed the head of state of the city council's opposition to the planned construction of a megacasino on the outskirts of the Slovak capital. "For us it's important that investors are not granted digressive tax rates there," said Durkovsky.
According to Gasparovic, the megacasino project would bring many jobs along with it, plus some extra money for both the state and the council. In his opinion, the issue has to be "properly consulted" at all levels.
