Lajcak Visits Ramallah to Discuss Peace Talks in Middle East

Ramallah/Bratislava, March 4 (TASR) – Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak, currently visiting Israel and the Palestinian territories, met Palestinian representatives in Ramallah on the West Bank on Thursday to discuss bilateral relations as well current developments in peace talks in the Middle East.

Palestinian National Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, Palestinian chief of diplomacy Riyad al-Maliki, and Palestinian chief negotiator Saib Erikat met with Lajcak.

In an attempt to boost bilateral cooperation, Lajcak presented a range of proposals, including the use of development-aid resources towards building Palestinian administrative institutions. Opportunities for Palestinian students via scholarships in Slovakia were also among the topics discussed. The two sides signed a Memorandum of Cooperation between the foreign affairs ministries.

Lajcak's visit is taking place just when Israel and Palestinians announced the launch of indirect peace talks, which should take place within the next four months – with the United States as a mediator.

According to Lajcak, the upcoming dialogue will focus on several substantial issues, mainly involving security and delimiting the borders of the future Palestinian state. Lajcak believes the talks have a good chance of being successful.

"Neither of the two sides may infringe this process by any measures that would worsen the atmosphere, or lower level of trust," Lajcak told TASR.
