Lajcak Meets Peres and Netanyahu to Discuss Iran and Bilateral Ties

Jerusalem/Bratislava, March 3 (TASR) - Iran must not get hold of nuclear weapons, Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak concurred with Israeli President Shimon Peres and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meetings in Jerusalem on Wednesday, spokesman for the Slovak ministry Peter Stano told TASR later in the day.

Both Israeli officials appreciated the friendly Slovak-Israeli relations and Slovakia's determined stance vis-a-vis anti-semitism.

Peres also found occasion to praise the progress that Slovakia has made in the development of its statehood since 1993 as well as in economic and political reforms.

As well, Lajcak invited Peres to visit Bratislava, and the trip is expected to take place later this year.

The Slovak official also enquired about Israel's view concerning Iran's nuclear programme. Lajcak, Peres and Netanjahu agreed that Iran's nuclear ambitions constitute the foremost threat not only for the Middle East but also in terms of global stability.

"Iran must not get away with infringing international law," said Lajcak, adding that Slovakia advocates that any penalties, if imposed, be approved by the UN's Security Council. "If this proves impossible, however, we don't rule out our own measures in conjunction with our partners," he noted, specifying that these measures would be aimed specifically against Iran's nuclear programme.

When it comes to the stalled Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Lajcak pledged Slovakia's readiness to help, as long as the parties in question find Slovakia's involvement useful. He also noted that the process needs to be given an impetus and called on the Israeli officials to adopt the measures needed for the process to be resumed.

While on his current trip to Israel, Lajcak is also slated to meet his Israeli counterpart Avigdor Lieberman as well as officials representing Palestinian territories.
