Bratislava, March 3 (TASR) - Slovakia will contribute €150,000 towards various projects aimed at commemorating the victims of the former Nazi death camp at Sobibor in Poland, with the Government allocating the financial resources from a reserve fund on Wednesday.
Slovakia's contribution is the highest this year from all participating countries.
Slovakia, Poland, the Netherlands and Israel are all taking part in the projects, with other countries planning to participate in the future. The work is being carried out with a view to building a museum at the site of the former camp. The total costs are estimated at around €6 million.
Current archaeological work at the site should be completed by December 2010. The Sobibor memorial site will be administered by the Polish Culture Ministry.
More than 25,000 Jews from Slovakia died at the Sobibor camp during WWII, more than at any other camp including Auschwitz. A plaque commemorating them was unveiled in 2005. By taking part in the project, Slovakia intends to send a clear signal to the international community vis-a-vis its efforts to come to terms with the tragedy of the Holocaust. The Government also plans to build a Holocaust museum at the site of the former concentration and work camp in Sered (Trnava region).
