KDH: Protected Area Near Future Casino Was Illegaly Transfered

Bratislava, March 2 (TASR) - According to information provided by preservationists, a protected pheasantry in the Bratislava borough of Jarovce has been illegally transfered, member of Petrzalka local council Viera Kimerlingova said at a Christian Democrat Movement (KDH) press conference on Tuesday.

Kimerlingova stressed that the planned multi-functional Metropolis complex in Jarovce and Petrzalka will involve massive construction and lead to high traffic levels near the protected pheasantry.

"There are indications that the developers own this pheasantry as well, even though a protected area can't be transferred," said Kimerlingova, adding that KDH will verify this information with experts. "If the information proves to be true, we'll take action ... we'll certainly turn to a prosecutor ... a protected area must definitely be owned by the state," Kimerlingova told TASR.

Developer TriGranit presented its €1.5-billion Metropolis project in January, with the plans including a casino and congress centre.

A petition organised against the construction of a megacasino has already been supported by 20 organisations and more than 56,000 people. The project was rejected by the local council, and Bratislava mayor Andrej Durkovsky (KDH) suggested that the plans for a casino should be dropped. The public only learnt about TriGranit's project in October 2009, more that 2.5 years after preparations were begun.
