Soldiers and Mountain Rescuers Receive Slovak-Hungarian Award

Budapest, March 2 (TASR) - Members of the Slovak-Hungarian contingent within UN's UNFICYP mission in Cyprus as well as members of the Mountain Rescue Service (HZS) in the High Tatras were presented with a joint Slovak-Hungarian award called "Good Neighbourhood and Understanding" by Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak and his Hungarian counterpart Peter Balazs in Budapest on Tuesday, TASR learnt later in the day.

The joint contingent, which is engaged in the preservation of peace in Cyprus, were nominated for the accolade by Slovak Defence Minister Jaroslav Baska.

HZS, for its part, rescued three Hungarian mountaineers who had been trapped beneath an avalanche in the High Tatras on January 2, 2010. Although the climbers managed to free themselves from beneath the snowslide, they sustained multiple injuries.

Several teams were then engaged in an extensive rescue operation, while bad weather prevented them from using helicopters. Upon finding the men swept away by the wall of snow, the rescuers provided first aid to the mountaineers and transported them to hospital.
