Slovak Transparency International Presents Set of Anti-corruption Tools

Bratislava, March 2 (TASR) - Although numerous anti-corruption measures have been introduced in Slovakia over the past 20 years in the sphere of the economy, a range of unused tools is still at hand to reduce the room for corruption, the Slovak branch of Transparency International (TIS) has stated.

According to TIS, scandals contradicting ethical principles have been mounting up recently, and fewer than one in ten people have the courage to report cases involving shady practices in the public sphere.

"That's why we're presenting a series of anti-corruption measures ... as a contribution to the discussion ... aimed at political parties in the run-up to the (June 12) general election, and subsequently, the new government ... in order to reduce the number of scandals," TIS director Gabriel Sipos told reporters on Tuesday.

Launching a network of various user-audit websites could feature among a set of effective anti-corruption tools in the future, suggested TIS. In addition, more emphasis should be put on the quality of analyses vis-a-vis government policies, as well as on more comprehensive assessments of their impacts, contributions and costs. When it comes to for-comments proceedings, not only separate material on a given policy's impact on public finances should be listed, these legislative phases should also focus on what TIS calls "an assessment of the corruption potential of alternative measures".

Various anti-corruption flaws exist even when it comes to the running of regulatory bodies and watchdog institutions, evidence for which could be the infamous 'notice-board tender', said TIS. "Beefing up regulators and watchdogs, such as the Supreme Audit Bureau (NKU) and the Public Procurements Office (UVO), could lead to a smaller number of corruption proceedings," said Sipos.
