Fico's Amendment Goes to House Without Committee's Recommendation

Bratislava, March 1 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico's constitutional amendment aimed at allowing his bill on proving the origin of property to be in line with the Constitution will be discussed in the House without a recommendation from the parliamentary constitutional committee, it emerged at a session of the committee on Monday.

A constitution amendment needs to be recommended by at least eight members of the 12-member committee. Only seven members turned up for the session on Monday, however, and only six of them voted for the recommendation - MPs from Fico's Smer-SD party, opposition Christian Democrat (KDH) vice-chair Daniel Lipsic and SDKU-DS MP Peter Missik. Katarina Tothova from LS-HZDS (which has strongly opposed the property origin act) abstained.

Committee head Mojmir Mamojka (Smer) believes that the draft of the constitutional amendment is enough for the bill on proving the origin of property to be passed. He is convinced that both drafts will be passed in Parliament.

Conversely, Lipsic thinks that Fico has no real interest in adopting an act on proving the origin of property that would be bullet-proof vis-a-vis the Constitution. He expects that after being passed, the bill will again be annulled by the Constitutional Court.
