Bratislava, February 28 (TASR) - The Slovaks who were reported to be in Chile when a massive earthquake struck the country on Saturday are all safe and well, Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Peter Stano told TASR on Sunday.
"We managed to contact the Slovak honorary consul in Chile's capital Santiago de Chile, as well as two Slovak tourists," said Stano.
The 21 employees of Slovak Energy Engineering Works (SES) Tlmace (Nitra region) who were working in the region are also well. "Our embassy in Buenos Aires in Argentina, which also covers neighbouring Chile, had been trying to get in touch with the Slovak citizens since Saturday morning, including in co-operation with SES Tlmace. It's still looking into whether there were any other Slovaks in that region", added Stano.
The 8.8-magnitude quake that hit Chile early on Saturday killed at least 300 people. Chile's President Michele Bachelet declared a "catastrophe" in central Chile.
