SMK Won't Support Proposal to Extend Term of UVO Chairman

Bratislava, February 26 (TASR) - Ethnic-Hungarian SMK won't support a legal amendment that would extend the term of incumbent Public Procurement Office (UVO) Chairman Bela Angyal (Most-Hid), SMK spokesperson Eva Dunajska said on Friday.

"SMK is astonished that the Government intends to address the problem of UVO Chairman by way of a legal amendment. This decision exposes the political connections between Smer-SD and Most-Hid parties," said Dunajska. She added that Angyal, formerly an SMK nominee, now holds a post of a Most-Hid regional chair - thus, he's anything but a current Opposition candidate.

On February 22, Prime Minister Robert Fico said that he promotes seats for opposition nominees in UVO as a fair solution and one that should be ensured by the new Government after the general election on June 12.

In this respect, Fico is proposing a so-called small legal amendment, as the term of office of Angyal is about to end on March 10 – and likewise with the term in office of UVO vice-chairman Rudolf Kulman on March 16. The Slovak National Party (SNS) has already expressed its willingness to discuss the small amendment, which is now before Parliament. The amendment would enable Angyal to stay on in his post until the end of the current electoral term. Fico noted that UVO is controlled by the Opposition and stated that he is willing to keep things that way. "As long as Smer-SD is in the Government and we're part of the governing Coalition, we'll promote an Opposition nominee as UVO head," he stressed. Chairmen of opposition parties SDKU-DS, the Christian Democrats (KDH) and the ethnic-Hungarian SMK have sent a letter to Fico asking him to allow them to replace Angyal, who they say has failed to carry out his duties. Fico said that he hasn't seen any new Opposition nominees yet, and called on the parties to provide some names first. He thinks, however, that it would be appropriate for the terms of office of the UVO chairman to correspond with electoral terms.
