Parliamentary Groups Evaluate Slovak-Hungarian Relations

Komarom, November 26 (TASR) - Evaluating Slovak-Hungarian relations was the focus for the mixed Inter-parliamentary Union of Slovak and Hungarian Parliaments, attended also by members of the respective friendship group representatives from each country held in Komarom, Hungary on Thursday.

Chairman of the Union's Slovak part Miroslav Ciz appreciated the positive atmosphere of the discussion regarding the tasks of the two parliaments. "We have defined the main interests of both contingents, exchanged our views and tried to demonstrate that good neighbour relations are probably the crucial element expected of us by our people," Ciz told TASR.

According to his Hungarian counterpart Gabor Hars, all participants concurred that parliaments play a significant role in alleviating tensions. "We discussed the troubling issues between our nations, including the Slovak Language Act amendment and the Forum of MPs in the Carpathian Basin (KMKF)," said Hars.

The Slovak-Hungarian Friendship Group, led by Slovak chairman Jan Richter and Hungarian chairman Gyorgy Rubovszky, also took part.

Richter appreciated the mutual communication, as well as the "ambition of the groups to evaluate certain positives in bilateral relations." He also praised the effort of the group members to find solutions for problematic issues.

Rubovszky objected not only to the Slovak Language Act but also to Slovak attitudes vis-a-vis the Benes Decrees. According to him, co-operation between the friendship groups has been frozen since the Benes Decrees, which date back more than 60 years, were reconfirmed in 2007.
