Fico: Slovak Tourism Satellite Account to Test-Run as of 2010

Bratislava, November 26 (TASR) - The development of tourism in Slovakia should be significantly boosted by three tourism pillars - new protected areas zonation, the Tourism Act and the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), said Prime Minister Robert Fico after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

"The satellite account is a way of gaining information about tourism. We'll start using it as of 2010," said Fico.

The TSA will be administered by institutions that evaluate information about tourism - the Slovak Statistics Office (SU SR) and Eurostat.

Slovakia has in recent years processed the methodology of TSA, and also experimentally set up tables of certain indicators of the development of offers and demands in the sector. The data in the tables cover the 2003-2007 period. The TSA will be further supplemented.

The account serves to measure the real economic contribution of tourism to the national economy. It shows the real share of tourism in gross GDP, and makes it possible to calculate the volume of GDP created by tourism and how this compares with other sectors.

The tables include data such as the number of tourists in Slovakia, the products, transport, fuel volumes and accommodation used and the incomes that hotels generate in relation to the number of their employees.

Four tourism segments were created in order to better suit TSA needs, - hotels, restaurants, types of transport, and travel agency services and culture.

According to the Economy Ministry, "the basis for complementing the TSA is to expand the sample of selected statistical data collection and improve the quality of collected data, which can be done only if financial means are increased".

The TSA project is one part of a report on the present state of tourism in Slovakia and on the fulfilment of tasks ensuing from the Government Manifesto for 2006-2010 in the tourism sector. The Economy Ministry's report, which apart from the three pillars includes tasks for supporting tourism, was examined by the Government on Wednesday, November 25.
