Bratislava, February 24 (TASR) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will most likely visit Slovakia in April to mark the 65th anniversary of Bratislava's liberation from Nazi occupation (April 4, 1945), well-informed sources told TASR on Wednesday.
Medvedev's visit to Slovakia was agreed upon at a meeting between the two countries' foreign affairs ministers Miroslav Lajcak and Sergei Lavrov in September 2009, with Medvedev's aide Sergei Prikhodko recently confirming plans for Medvedev's visit to Slovakia.
Marek Trubac, spokesman for Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic, told TASR that no official date for Medvedev's visit has been specified as yet. "We're working intensively on preparations of Mr. President Medvedev's visit. I can't confirm any date, but we would be happy to have him here this year," he told TASR.
In turn, French President Nicolas Sarkozy's visit, which has been postponed several times, appears unlikely to take place in the months to come. An unnamed source told TASR that Sarkozy's visit is hardly feasible partly in the light of the upcoming election campaign in Slovakia.
No French President has visited Slovakia since it became independent in 1993. Trubac told TASR that an invitation for Sarkozy to visit Slovakia is still valid, but, again, no date has been set yet.
