Mikolaj: Businesses Not Interested in Investing in R&D

Bratislava, November 26 (TASR) - Education Minister Jan Mikolaj said on Thursday that he is surprised at the lack of business interest in the financial assistance that companies can receive from the state if they invest in research and development.

"We have appeals for co-operation between the public and private sectors. If they are willing to co-finance (projects), the state will contribute the same sum," assured Mikolaj.

The Education Ministry has drawn up a law on stimuli for research and development, which promises tax relief for investments.

President Ivan Gasparovic has called on businessmen to play a bigger role. "The business sphere in Slovakia still doesn't understand the interconnection with science and the government that it needs," said Gasparovic at a conference entitled 'Science, Politics and the State'.

"They (companies) also have to form their own R&D bases," agreed chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) Jaromir Pastorek.
