Fico: Healthcare's Worst Problem - State Can't Affect VUC Decisions

Bratislava, February 23 (TASR) - Prime Minister Robert Fico following a personal inspection at the Health Ministry on Tuesday said that the sector's worst problem is that the state failed to stop the expansion of healthcare providers such as physicians, labs and radiodiagnostic sites that fall under the authority of administrative regions.
"Neither the ministry nor the state has any tool to stop or aptly restrict this fast expansion of healthcare providers," he said.
"I believe that a big mistake was made during the creation of administrative regions, aka VUCs, in that the state hasn't acquired vetoing powers or other ways of intervening in the decisions of the VUCs. That isn't a problem solely in the healthcare sector," he said. According to Fico, the state has its own strategy but can't pursue it within the remit of the VUCs as it isn't allowed to cancel, alter or veto VUC decisions. He intends to moot this topic in talks with VUCS, towns and local councils.
