Dzurinda Says Government Meeting in Poprad a Pre-Election Show

Poprad, November 25 (TASR) - Pre-election theatre is the phrase used on Wednesday by the strongest opposition SDKU-DS party leader Mikulas Dzurinda to describe the Government's away-from-home session earlier on Wednesday in Presov.

The Government, according to Dzurinda, failed to address the region's pressing problems such as the troubled Roma minority, infrastructure and a shortage of work coupled with redundancies and the absence of investment.

Dzurinda said that Prime Minister and Smer-SD chairman Robert Fico held an opening ceremony of the tunnel Borik days early as a publicity campaign to promote Smer-backed candidate Peter Chudik for the region's chairman.

Borik tunnel construction is one and half years behind schedule and will not be commissioned until December 5, he said. "Why such theatrical gestures when we are lagging in motorway construction and launching a project which will not immediately cater to people?" he asked.

Fico, according to the SDKU leader, pledged to complete a motorway linking Bratislava and Kosice before 2010 but nearing the year-end the motorway is not complete – not even to Martin, a town in Zilina region.

Government, too, was set to discuss the development of tourism but it is only being used as a cover-up to put on a dog and pony show for its candidates, said Dzurinda.

The party's deputy chairwoman Iveta Radicova rolled out her proposals to alleviate unemployment problems. The jobless benefit should be extended from six months to eight and the creation of more part-time jobs to help maintain employment.
