Poprad, November 25 (TASR) - In reaction to criticism from Opposition SDKU-DS chairman that the Roma issue was not being addressed during Government's meeting in Poprad (Presov region), Prime Minister Robert Fico said Wednesday that this will be the subject of a separate discussion.
Dzurinda also listed infrastructure and unemployment as problems plaguing the area.
Fico said that the Roma issue is becoming very problematic not only due to their standing in society but also due to their share of criminal activities. As well, anti-Roma extremism has started to emerge and involves people who want "simple solutions" such as force and repression. He also said that as long as Roma don't have jobs to sustain them, it is hard to work any miracles.
The Premier said that there have already been two Cabinet meetings in the area focusing on socio-economic issues, and asked at the same time how many times Dzurinda was in this region with his former government. He also asked what did Dzurinda do apart from reconstructing his own house in this region, as he was born there.
Juraj Blanar, Smer-SD regional and VUC (Higher Territorial Unit) chairman in neighbouring Zilina region, said that the Government at its meetings in the Presov region has always addressed the actual problems facing the region. He spoke in favour of supporting the development of local tourism, as it is directly connected to employment.
