Figel: KDH Concedes Smer Scenario Only Out of Sense of Duty to Slovakia

Bratislava, February 22 (TASR) - The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) is willing to take part in a potential future coalition with Smer-SD because of the sense of responsibility it feels for Slovakia, KDH chairman Jan Figel said at a press conference on Monday.

Figel was reacting to a statement made by SDKU-DS parliamentary caucus chairman Stanislav Janis, who criticised KDH for playing both sides. "We refute the accusation of double-dealing. The main alternative we prefer is that of Smer-SD in opposition, and it's only in a secondary crisis scenario, in a situation in which no government is possible without the participation of Smer-SD, that we would take a partnership with Smer-SD into consideration ... so that measures for Slovakia to deal with the crisis can be found," said Figel.

According to him, KDH keeps its word and delivers on its promises. "On Saturday, I conveyed our determination to be the heart of the rightist alternative for voters as we were back in 2002. To win the parliamentary elections formally and actually is not the same thing, and I will do my utmost for the Right to become the actual winners," claimed Figel, adding that SDKU is KDH's closest natural partner.

Janis told TASR earlier on the same day that KDH appear to be keeping a foot in both camps when it comes to post-election co-operation - the same stance that it took up after the last general election in 2006. "I'm sorry if KDH is speculating about some kind of a crisis alternative a few months before the election (scheduled for June 12). Our stance is absolutely clear - we won't go into a government with Smer-SD. Those who don't believe in themselves concede crisis alternatives," said Janis, adding that he views KDH as two-faced, preparing the ground for a situation in which the Right won't be able to form a coalition after the election.
