Bratislava, February 20 (TASR) - The nonparliamentary Movement for a Democracy (HZD), at the national congress on Saturday, announced its withdrawal from the June 12 general election in order to help Smer-SD party win another four-year term and recommended its voters to vote in favour of the strongest governing party.
HZD Chairman Jozef Grapa clarified that his party wishes to help create stability for Slovakia and build a welfare state.
The congress, too, has offered to cooperate with Smer-SD, represented here by Chairman and Premier Robert Fico, on putting together its list of candidates which HZD hopes to include its members.
"The election which will decide whether Slovakia will remain a welfare state or not is drawing near. That's why we have decided on this move which may be of assistance to Smer-SD," said Grapa.
According to him, the HZD presidium was at the same time told to make arrangements to amalgamate HZD into Smer-SD as well as take a decision on the HZD future.
Also present President Ivan Gasparovic, honorary chairman and founder of HZD, gave assurances that each member would be a great boon for Fico's party and for those choosing to enter Smer-SD the party switch will allow them to continue to follow on their social agenda.
Fico told the congress that Smer-SD will welcome in all HZD members who will choose to enter the strongest ruling party. "We will greet any helpful hand which will want to bolster a social and national pillar," he said.
