Buzek: KDH was First Christian Democratic Party after Fall of Iron Curtain

Zilina, February 20 (TASR) - The opposition parliamentary party Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) held a special convention on Saturday to mark its 20th anniversary with European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek in attendance.

Two decades ago KDH was the first Christian Democratic party to come into being in the former socialist bloc, according to Buzek. "The founding was a vital event for all of us since Christian values are basic and very important for all of us. The European Union was built up by Christian democracy..." said EP president.

Marking the founding anniversary KDH Chairman Jan Figel has presented an honorary medal to Buzek who he said epitomises a 20-year journey since the fall of the iron curtain.

Figel believes that 20-year evolution of Slovakia's freedom, democracy and rule of law is inherently tied to 20 years of the operation, existence and development of Christian democracy.
