Gasparovic's Creation HZD Could Merge With Fico's Smer

Bratislava, February 19 (TASR) - The national congress of the extra-parliamentary Movement for Democracy (HZD), which will take place on Saturday, will probably vote in favour of a merger with the strongest party on the Slovak political scene at the moment, Premier Robert Fico's Smer-SD, TASR learnt on Friday.

HZD was set up in July 2002 after Ivan Gasparovic, who is now the country's president, left his mother party, Vladimir Meciar's HZDS.

HZD's current leader Jozef Grapa told TASR that Gasparovic has been invited to the upcoming party congress, as has Prime Minister Robert Fico. It's still unclear as to whether both invited officials will attend the gathering, however.

Grapa said that the possibility of HZD and Smer merging seems very realistic. "Such was also the proposal of the party's presidium," he stated, adding that the two parties have been moving closer together in terms of their programmes for a long time, and have been co-operating in a number of areas to date.
